SETTING THE SCENE: Saturday's game marks the 11th All-Star Game in the 12-year history of Major League Lacrosse … The All-Star Game was not held during the 2004 season … It will be just the third time that the All-Star Game has been played in a city that does not have an MLL team … In 2002, the All-Star Game was played in Bowie, Md. at Prince George's Stadium … In 2005, the All-Star Game was held at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver … This is the first time a Major League Lacrosse game has been played in the State of Florida … Boston had hosted the All-Star Game in four of the previous six seasons prior to this year.
O’ SAY CAN YOU SING?: A pair of students from Florida Atlantic University - Geraldine Fleurimond and Rebecca Guillaume - will be performing the Canadian and United States national anthems, respectively, at the 2012 MLL All-Star Game … Fleuirmond is a Biochemistry major and performs the national anthem at many FAU athletic events … Meanwhile, Guillaume has been singing since she was six years old and has performed at many prestigious events, including singing the Star Spangled Banner for President Barack Obama.
ULTIMATE FANS: The MLL has announced that Dallas Towner of Delaware and Ian Burbidge of Oregon are the winners of the Ultimate MLL Fan contest and will serve as honorary captains for Saturday night’s All-Star Game.
MLL GIVES BACK: For the sixth straight season, Major League Lacrosse will hold an All-Star Game jersey auction following the All-Star Game … This year's auction will benefit the HEADStrong Foundation … Following the All-Star Game, the players will autograph their game-used jerseys, which will then be auctioned off on the MLL website … Once again, the New Balance Foundation will match the net dollar amount from the auction … Over the last five years, the All-Star Game jersey auction has raised over $140,000 for charities across the nation … The jersey auction will begin on Saturday, June 30 at 12 p.m. and last for 10 days.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!: Saturday’s game will be televised live on ESPN2 and will also be available online on ESPN3.com … Joe Beninati and Quint Kessenich will handle the play-by-play and color analyst duties, respectively.
SHOW OFF THOSE SKILLS: For the 10th straight season, Major League Lacrosse will hold its annual Bud Light Skills Competition … The competition will consist of the Fastest Shot and Freestyle contests along with the Goalie Gauntlet … The Gauntlet replaced the two-point accuracy shot contest at last year's All-Star Game and will consist of an obstacle course for the six participants … Defenseman Kyle Hartzell of the Ohio Machine is the defending champion in the Fastest Shot contest while Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil won last year's Freestyle event.
A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME?: This year marks the third time that the All-Star Game has featured an Old School-Young Gun format … If the first two meetings are any indication, fans could be treated to some bonus lacrosse … Both previous match-ups have ended in overtime with each team winning once … In 2005, Walid Hajj scored the game-winning goal as the Young Guns posted a 21-20 victory … In the 2009 game at Denver, defenseman Brodie Merrill gave the Old School All-Stars a 22-21 victory by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime.
ON THE SIDELINES: Boston Cannons Coach Steve Duffy will serve as the head coach for the Young Guns All-Stars while Ohio Machine Coach Ted Garber will be leading the Old School All-Stars in Saturday's All-Star Game … In his first season with the Cannons, Duffy has led Boston to a 5-3 record … Meanwhile, Garber is in his first season as the Ohio Machine coach.
LAST YEAR’S GAME: Midfielder Stephen Berger scored the eventual game-winning goal with 2:49 left in the fourth quarter as Team Warrior rallied to edge Team Authority by a 21-20 margin at the 2011 Sports Authority MLL All-Star Game at Harvard Stadium … It marked the third straight year that the All-Star Game was decided by a single point … The win by Team Warrior overshadowed an historic performance by Team Authority midfielder Michael Kimmel … The Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors after setting an All-Star Game record with nine points … He scored five goals, including an All-Star Game record-tying three two-point goals, with an assist … Midfielder Brad Ross led Team Warrior with three goals, including a two-point marker, while attackman Brendan Mundorf added a goal with three assists.
SWEET 16: Of the 20 players listed on the Young Guns All-Stars roster for Saturday's All-Star Game, 16 of them are appearing in the All-Star Game for the first time … Only goalkeeper Drew Adams, defenseman Michael Evans, attackman Max Seibald and midfielder Peet Poillon have previously played in an All-Star Game … There are no first time All-Stars on the Old School roster for Saturday's game.
GREAT EIGHT: Rochester Rattlers midfielder Matt Striebel will set an MLL All-Star Game record by playing in his MLL-record eighth All-Star Game this year … He is the fifth player in MLL history to play in at least six All-Star Games … Striebel, who has played in each of the last eight All-Star affairs, has scored three goals with five assists in his MLL All-Star Game career.
INSTANT IMPACT: Long Island Lizards attackman Matt Gibson is the only rookie who was named to the All-Star Game this year … The former Yale University attackman leads all MLL rookies with 10 goals and 10 assists in five games this season … He is also the only rookie to earn Cascade Rookie of the Week honors twice … Gibson is now the 14th rookie in MLL history to play in the All-Star Game.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: Each of the last three All-Star Games have been decided by a one-point margin, including an overtime game in 2009 … There have been four All-Star Games decided by a single point … In 2005, the Young Gun All-Stars posted a 21-20 overtime victory over the Old School All-Stars at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver … The average margin of victory in the first 10 All-Star Games has been 6.1 points per game with two games being decided by 15 or more points.
DEUCES ARE WILD: Through the first eight weeks of the 2012 MLL regular season, there have been 64 two-point goals scored among the League's eight teams, which is already the fourth-highest total in MLL history … The Chesapeake Bayhawks, who lead the MLL with a 7-1 record, have tallied a league-high 18 two-point goals and need just seven two-point goals to tie the MLL single-season record set by the Boston Cannons in 2002.
10 COUNT FOR DIXON: Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Kyle Dixon is well on his way to breaking the MLL record for most two-point goals by a player in a single season … Entering the All-Star Game, the former University of Virginia midfielder has tallied a league-high 10 two-point goals … It is the third time in the last four years that Dixon has recorded 10 or more two-point goals … In the 12 years of Major League Lacrosse, a player has tallied 10 or more two-point goals only five times … Earlier this season, Dixon became the all-time leader in two-point goals and now has 42 career two-point goals.
MISTER ASSISTER: While Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil is more known for his goal-scoring ability, the former Johns Hopkins University midfielder has been generating more assists this year and currently leads the MLL with 25 assists at the All-Star Break … He is also the MLL's leader with 46 points … Rabil is trying to become the first midfielder in MLL history to lead the league in assists.
HIGH FIVE: Both the Chesapeake Bayhawks and the Long Island Lizards enter the All-Star Game wishing they could continue their schedules this week as both teams have won five straight games …The Bayhawks have overcome their lone setback against Rochester on May 12 to win five games in a row while the Lizards have overcome an 0-2 start to win five straight games.
UNCONNECT FOUR: The Charlotte Hounds snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday night by posting an exciting 17-16 victory over the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium … It marked the Hounds' second victory over the Machine this year … On May 12, Charlotte earned an 18-15 win over Ohio at American Legion Memorial Stadium … While Charlotte snapped its four-game losing streak, Ohio lost for the fourth straight game.
