The Denver Outlaws took over the MLL Weekly Awards, as Defender Matt Bocklet and Face-Off Specialist Andrew Hennessey were named Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Bocklet won the Bud Light MVP for his three goal, five groundball performance on the Fourth of July versus the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Hennessey handled the face-off duties for the Outlaws, collecting two ground balls and going 14-26 in face offs.
Bocklett was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for his play in a 12-10 Outlaws win over Chesapeake on the 4
th of July. The win moved the Outlaws to 5-3 and into a first place tie in the Major League Lacrosse standings. In addition to his work on the defensive end in helping to hold the high-scoring Bayhawks to just 10 points, Bocklett got into the act on the offensive end as well scoring 3 goals. Bocklett opened the scoring with a goal just 53 seconds into the game and added another before the first quarter was over. Bocklett opened the second half scoring as well with a goal just 12 seconds into the 3
rd quarter, breaking a 6-6 halftime tie.
“With Matt [Bocklet] scoring three goals; it’s pretty huge for a long-stick defender to do that,” Outlaws Head Coach
Brian Reese said. “He scored some huge goals and got the momentum going.”
Outlaws rookie face-off specialist Andrew Hennessey earns Rookie of the Week honors by winning 54% of his face-offs in the win over Chesapeake. The 11
th overall pick in this years’ MLL Draft, the rookie out of Bryant University was making just his second appearance of the season. The 54% total is made even more impressive by the fact that he was going head-to-head with the Bayhawks’ Alex Smith, widely considered the best face-off specialist in Major League Lacrosse.
