Major League Lacrosse Announces Weekly Award Winners For Week 3
Kevin Leveille and Drew Adams Take Home Week 3 Honors
Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, has announced it’s weekly award winners following this past weekend's action. Kevin Leveille of the Chicago Machine was named Offensive Player of the Week and Drew Adams of the Long Island Lizards was named Defensive Player of the Week for their strong performances.
Leveille scored five points on four goals and an assist for the Machine in their victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks. It was the first loss of the season for Chesapeake, who was just a week removed from scoring 25 goals against Toronto.
Leveille has performed well in all three games this season, scoring at least three points in each Machine game. His five points over the weekend was his highest scoring output of the young season. He is currently tied for third in the MLL in points with 12.
The tone was set early in the game, as Leveille scored his first goal just 11 seconds into the opening quarter. Leveille then scored again, an unassisted strike four and a half minutes in, to give Chicago the 2-0 lead.
Leveille was selected in the second round (ninth overall) by Boston in the 2003 MLL Draft. He played a full season his rookie year, scoring 28 goals in 12 games played. He has scored at least 27 goals in all six of his full seasons, and in four of those years he scored at least 35 goals.
Drew Adams lifted the Long Island Lizards to their first win of the season with his performance between the pipes. The Lizards defeated the Boston Cannons 13-11, handing Boston their first loss of the season. Adams made 14 saves on 23 shots (.609 save percentage).
Adams had only allowed four goals in the first three quarters, including a shutout in the third quarter. Adams now leads the MLL in goals against average at 11.33. It is his second season in the league, though last year he only saw seven minutes of game action.
“It is my job to make the saves, and my main focus is always to keep the ball out of the net,” said Adams. “I was fortunate to make some stops early, and that gave me some good momentum for the rest of the game.”
Adams was the third goalkeeper taken in the 2009 MLL Draft, after Doc Schneider and Jordan Burke. He is number one in Penn State history in career saves (694), and was named ECAC Goalkeeper of the Year three times. No other goalkeeper besides Adams has seen any time on the field for the Lizards yet this season.
