Major League Lacrosse Announces Weekly Award Winners For Week 2

Max Seibald and Alex Smith Take Home Week 2 Honors

Max Seibald, midfielder for the Denver Outlaws, was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Chesapeake Bayhawks’ midfielder, Alex Smith was named Defensive Player of the Week following their performances on Saturday.

Seibald helped Denver avoid an 0-2 start by scoring three goals and adding three assists, as the Outlaws defeated Long Island 13-10.  In fact, Seibald accounted for one third of all the Outlaws points in the game. Denver Head Coach Brian Reese on his second year midfielder; “He scored big goals and made the big plays when we need them most,” said Reese. “He drew special attention for the Long Island defense and still was able to produce.”

Seibald's scored two goals in the third quarter, which proved to be the decisive quarter in the win. The game was tied 6-6 at the half, before the Outlaws outscored Long Island 7-2 in the third and were able to hold on for the win despite being shut out in the fourth quarter.

Drafted out of Cornell in 2009, Seibald played in 10 games as a rookie, scoring 12 points, he is already just one point shy of that total through two games this season.

Alex Smith, as he typically does, set the tone for Chesapeake with his faceoff play in the Bayhawks' 25-12 blowout of Toronto on Saturday. He won 34 out of 39 faceoffs, for and .872 win percentage. On the season, Smith has won 51 out of 64 total faceoffs (80 percent) in helping Chesapeake start the season 2-0.

Bayhawks General Manager Spencer Ford could not say enough about Smith's importance to the team. “No other players own their trade the way Alex does, and he continually sets the standard when it comes to faceoffs,” said Ford. “When we score, he gets us the ball back time and time again and that makes it very difficult for the opposing teams. He takes the wind right out of their sails.”

Ford also commented that Smith has an uncanny ability to control the ball and put it exactly where he wants it to go. The Bayhawk wings rarely have to jump or reach for the ball when Smith is on his game, and the whole process appears effortless.

This week, Chesapeake looks to remain undefeated as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Chicago Machine on Sunday at 4 pm. Seibald and the Outlaws play a second straight home game on Saturday at 9 pm against Toronto, who are winless on the season.
