DENVER–The Denver Outlaws selected 18 players in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft today, bringing the team’s roster to 40 players.
“We wanted to make sure that we created challenges and competition at each position,” Outlaws General Manager Tony Seaman said. “I strongly believe we accomplished those goals”.
After selecting MLL All-Decade Team member Lee Zink in the opening round, the Outlaws chose Peter Vlahakas, who currently holds four MLL records including career-face off wins and single game face-off wins.
“We went into the draft with specific needs and area we wanted to address,” Outlaws Head Coach Jim Stagnitta said. “We had to provide depth at the attack position as well as at the Faceoff X. I believe we accomplished this with our picks. Another area we wanted to address was our goalie situation and I was pleased to be able to add two additional proven stoppers. I am pleased with the direction our roster is going”.
Denver, which chose sixth in each of the 18 rounds, used its third-round pick on goalie Adam Fullerton, who is currently serving the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.
With their fourth-round selection, the Outlaws brought back midfielder Justin Bokmeyer, who was college teammates with Fullerton at Army and completed a tour of duty in Iraq last year.
Midfielder Steve Giannone was brought back to the team in the fifth round before the Outlaws used their next four choices on new players. Denver drafted midfielders Chris Mattes and John Schiavone with their sixth and seventh-round selections, respectively. The Outlaws chose attackmen in rounds eight and nine – Cooper MacDonnell and then Ryan Hoff before using a 10th-round choice on midfielder Andrew Lay, who spent time with the club last season after graduating from the University of Denver.
Denver brought back midfielder Casey Cittadino in Round 11 and did the same with defenseman Jordan Hendry in Round 12.
Newcomers Alex Hopmann (midfielder) joined the club in the 13th round, Matt Bernier (LSM) in the 14th and Joe Yevoli (Attack) in the 15th.
The Outlaws used their 16th selection to bring back goalie Ben Brown.
Denver closed out the supplemental draft with defender Brett Hughes and attackman Rich Mirabito.
Overall, the team chose five midfielders, four defenseman, four attackmen, three faceoff men and two goalies.
