MATT BROWN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

DENVER — Attackman Matt Brown announced his retirement on Wednesday, ending his five-year MLL career. Brown spent all five seasons (2006-10) with Denver and totaled 138 goals, including two 2-pointers, and 20 assists to finish with 160 points in 56 career games. He ranks second in club history in goals scored, third in total points and eighth in assists. Brown finishes his career ranked 20th in MLL history in goals scored. He was promoted to associate head coach of the University of Denver’s men’s lacrosse team on June 15, 2011, and retiring from the Outlaws gives him a chance to focus on his expanded role with the Pioneers.

"Matt has been an important part of the Outlaws franchise from the very beginning,” Outlaws General Manager Brian Reese said. “I can’t say enough good things about Matt. He is a great team player, a tremendous ambassador for the sport in Colorado and he is one of the best goal scorers in MLL history.

"We are completely supportive of Matt's decision to put more time into his new position at University of Denver. He will still be impacting Colorado lacrosse in a positive way and will go down as one of the all-time great Denver Outlaws."

Brown was a four-year starter at the University of Denver, where he finished with 113 goals and 24 assists (137 pts.) in 56 games.

"Since June 11, 2009, the day I accepted this position at DU, Matt Brown has been at my side," University of Denver Head Coach Bill Tierney said. "Without him I would have been lost. He is loyal, trustworthy and tireless in his efforts for our program. He played at DU, he knows and loves the place, and there is absolutely no better man to fill the role as my first assistant."

At DU, Brown earned first team All-Great Western Lacrosse League honors as a senior. He led the Pioneers with 42 points (35 goals, 7 assists) and ranked eighth in the nation while leading the GWLL with 2.57 goals per game. Brown holds the school record with seven consecutive hat tricks to open his career as a freshman. His 113 goals rank fourth and his 137 points are sixth in school annals.

“It has been an incredible experience playing for the Denver Outlaws the past five seasons,” Brown said. “The Outlaws are a first-class organization and the model of what all Major League Lacrosse franchises should aspire to be. I would like to thank (Vice President of Edge Sports & Entertainment) Mac Freeman for his leadership and support along with Brian Reese, who was not only a great general manager and coach, but a great friend. The fans of the Denver Outlaws are the best around. I can’t tell you how excited we get as players to play for such great fans. As players, we hope that the fans continue their loyal support of lacrosse here in Colorado as they are the difference.

“Most importantly I would like to thank all of my past teammates. These are guys that I have made friendships with that will last forever.  Although I will not be able to play anymore due to my recent added responsibilities with our University of Denver Men’s Lacrosse team, I will be there to cheer the Outlaws on to a Major League Lacrosse Championship.”

In his fifth season as an assistant coach at DU in 2011, the Pioneers made NCAA history as the first team located west of the Mississippi River to reach the Final Four. DU also became the first team west of the Mississippi to host a NCAA Tournament game when it defeated Villanova 13-10 on May 15, 2011. The Pioneers’ 15-3 record represented the most wins for a single season in team history.
