DENVER — Goalie Jesse Schwartzman has been named the Week 2 MLL Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Schwartzman turned away 12-of-19 (.632) shots fired by the Cannons in Denver’s 13-12 victory in Boston on Saturday, while also pacing the team with five ground balls. He has made 25 saves and allowed just 15 goals (.625 pct.) this season and leads the league in goals against average (8.9) and save percentage (among those that have played in both of their team’s games). He only played three quarters against Boston, stepping aside so that 1st Lt. Adam Fullerton could play the fourth quarter in goal, as Fullerton is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan before the Outlaws’ next game.
The weekly award is the fourth of Schwartzman’s career, which ties him with attackman Brendan Mundorf for most in club history. Mundorf won his fourth weekly honor in Week 1 after setting a team-record with 10 points vs. Hamilton (5/14).
With Mundorf receiving Offensive Player of the Week honors last week, this marks the second time in club history that the team has had players receive weekly awards in consecutive weeks. The other time that happened was when Schwartzman won back-to-back Defensive Player of the Week Awards in Week 5 and 6 of 2009.
The Outlaws return home Saturday, June 11 to face the Chesapeake Bayhawks at 7 p.m. MDT. Tickets are available for as low as $10 and may be purchased online at www.DenverOutlaws.comor over the phone by calling 303-OUTLAWS.
