DENVER - Several familiar faces took the field at Sports Authority Field at Mile High as the Outlaws defeated Long Island 19-11 with the help of returning NLL players Brendan Mundorf, Steve Holmes, Jordan McBride and Eric Martin, as well as a new face altogether in rookie faceoff specialist, Stephen Robarge.
With the win, Denver improves to 11-0 all-time in the regular season against the Lizards.
Denver was ready to take on the Long Island Lizards after coming off a win last week against the Hamilton Nationals and the return of NLL players. Mundorf, an all-MLL honoree in 2011, was in New York representing the Philadelphia Wings in the NLL playoffs. This is Mundorf’s first game of the outdoor season. Throughout the game Mundorf scored a total of three goals with one assist.
Stephen Robarge won 8-of-13 faceoffs in the first half of his first career MLL game. He is scheduled to graduate from VMI on Wednesday.
“MLL is a big step from college and we are thrilled to see what he can do here,” General Manager Tony Seaman said.
The newcomers to the team meshed well with the other new faces that joined the Outlaws prior to the 2012 season.
Jeremy Sieverts, who was acquired via trade prior to the season, earned his second Bud Light Player of the Game award with a six-point outing. Through three games, Sieverts as posted a hat trick and at least four points in each of Denver’s games this far. He currently has 11 goals and 17 points on the year – both of which lead the league.
The Lizards scored two goals within the first two minutes to start the game. The Outlaws answered with a goal by Josh Sims and an assist by Terry Kimener. Kimener finished the game with a pair of assists and ranks third in the league with seven assists on the season.
Long Island responded with back-to-back goals, to open up a 4-1 lead that represented the largest deficit Denver had faced in the season.
The Outlaws struck back with a five-goal run that was kickstarted by McBride’s first tally in his return to the MLL. Munford then tacked on his first of the outdoor season to pull the Outlaws within one.
Sims netted his second of four goals in the game to knot the score 4-4 with 2:51 to play in the quarter. He moved into second place on the MLL leaderboard with nine goals on the season – despite only playing two full games this year.
Nate Watkins scored his first of the season to give the Outlaws their first lead of the night. Mundorf’s second goal gave Denver a 6-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Outlaws defense held off the Lizards for nearly fifteen minutes during the second and third quarters, using the strong defensive play to go on an 8-3 run over the two frames.
During this period the team extended its lead with help from Sieverts, who had three of his four goals during that stretch.
Peet Poillon helped the Outlaws seal their third win of the season with two goals and an assist in the fourth quarter. Poillon moved into a tie for third place in the league with eight goals on the season.
The Outlaws return to Denver on Saturday, May 19 to face the only other undefeated team in the MLL, the Boston Cannons at 7 p.m. MDT at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Tickets are available online or over the phone at 303-OUTLAWS.
