ThunderRidge Grizzles vs. Highlands Ranch Falcons
March 23, 2012
The first game of the 2012 Denver Outlaws High School Game of the Week featured ThunderRidge against Highlands Ranch in an early season rivalry game. The Grizzles came into the game with a 5-1 record, boosting one of the states top scorers in Jameson Mountfort. While the Falcons sported a 1-3 record, but the win was already in Douglas County League play.
The first half of the game was a defensive battle between the two schools. ThunderRidge had many missed opportunities to score, but the Falcons played excellent defense. Highlands Ranch took advantage of the chances they had to score and led at halftime 5-4. The second half began with a Highlands Ranch scoring three consecutive goals, to jump out to an 8-4 lead they would never lose. The Grizzles would continue to miss chances to score, hitting the post several times. They also dealt with great goaltending from Highlands Ranch goalie, Matt Tallant. ThunderRidge would try to battle back late in the game, but it was too late and Highlands Ranch won 12-8.
Highlands Ranch coach and Denver Outlaws defenseman Matt Bocklet chose Highlands Ranch attack man # 1 Austin Haldorson (4 goals, 4 assists) as the Player of the Game. When asked about the highlight of the game Coach Bocklet said, “I would say the highlight was # 13 Max Abbott's goal. We were winning 4-3 in the second quarter and he came off the bench and scored a goal from about 15 yards out. It gave our team a huge momentum boost.” Being early in the season Coach Bocklet was asked about what the Falcons will take away from this game, “I hope we realize that when we play hard and smart as a team, that we will be able to win a lot of games. It was the most intensity I have seen from our team all year, and it needs to continue.”
The Outlaws would like to congratulate the Highlands Ranch Falcons and wish them good luck on the rest of the season. You can check out Highlands Ranch’s next game on March 27 against Smoky Hill at Legacy Stadium.
