The New Guys: Greg Downing & Curtis Dickson

Greg Downing, a midfielder selected by the Denver Outlaws in the 2012 MLL Expansion Draft, began his MLL career with the Los Angeles Riptide after being selected sixth overall in the first round of the collegiate draft. He came from Fairfield University where he was a three-time All-American. Downing’s college lacrosse career was peppered with achievements. In 2005 he helped lead the Fairfield Stags to the Great Western Lacrosse League Championships and to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament. In 2006 and 2007, he was selected for the Tewaaraton Trophy Preseason Watch List, an award given to the nation’s most outstanding NCAA lacrosse player. Downing was Fairfield University lacrosse program’s only multi-All-America selection, earning honorable mention accolades all four years. Downing ended his collegiate lacrosse career with 101 goals and 40 assists for a total of 141 points. He also fell just short of Max Seibald’s world record of 110 mph shot, clocking in at 109 mph.

Downing has made a big name for himself in the MLL and NLL. As a two-way midfielder who combines explosive offensive skills, a competitive defense and excellent athleticism, Downing helped lead the Boston Cannons to the 2011 Steinfeld Cup, and won a bronze medal with Team USA at the World Indoor Championship in Prague. This will be his second stint with the Outlaws, as he appeared in the first two games of the 2008 season for the club. During these games Downing set a career-high with a four-goal performance including the game-winning goal against the Boston Cannons. Before the 2009 season, the Outlaws traded Downing to the Boston Cannons during the Collegiate Draft.

A resident of British Columbia and a newcomer to the MLL, Curtis Dickson was also selected by the Outlaws during the 2012 Expansion Draft. Dickson has had great success during his lacrosse career both collegiately and in the NLL. He is a two time All-American out of the University of Delaware, and fared well in his professional lacrosse debut with the NLL Calgary Roughnecks. He earned the 2011 NLL Rookie of the Year after he lead the league with 33 goals and ranked second in total points (51) during the 2011 season.

He comes from a family of lacrosse players, his father played box lacrosse in the Western Lacrosse Association, an amateur men’s league sanctioned by the Canadian Lacrosse Association. As a newcomer to the MLL, Dickson has a promising future ahead of him with the Denver Outlaws.
