OUTLAWS WRAP HOME PORTION OF 2011 TRAINING CAMP

The Denver Outlaws completed the first weekend of their sixth annual training camp on Sunday at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Below are Head Coach Tom Slate's reflections on the two-day training session.

On Training Camp
“We had some guys missing with injuries and some guys playing the NLL, but overall, it was good to get out there and get a good six hours of training in. I think guys responded real well and we got out of it relatively injury free. We learned a lot and sharpened the skills. I’m really looking forward to next weekend.”

On areas of focus during Training Camp
“Typically when you go into a camp we want to touch on every area – putting in our formations on offense, talking through the defensive slide packages. But we also understand that we are missing guys. Rides, clears and faceoffs were big things that we wanted to focus on, along with penalty play. We wanted to make sure everybody that was here got a good, hard workout in.”

On the attack unit
“Attack looked really good. That was probably the strength this weekend with the additions of Athan Iannucci and Connor Martin came today and joined with Brendan Mundorf and Drew Westervelt. We are missing some of our defensemen and some of our midfielders, so attack looked good.”

On how much they were able to work on team strategy
“We put some formations in from last year and a couple of wrinkles for this year. But, we are going to have to go back over that with players that were missing. We have a practice next weekend before the scrimmage against the (Chesapeake) Bayhawks. So, we will hopefully have more guys in and the guys here will understand them and help the new guys next weekend.”

On team's rookies
“It is tough to say – we do not have our college kids in yet. Athan Iannucci, I thought played well and finished well for us on attack. We are expecting big things of Sean DeLaney.”

On the defense
Lee (Zink) looked very good. He has been our leader and our captain back there for awhile. He is in shape and it is great to have him back there. Matt Bocklet and Dillon Roy looked great as well – it is good to have those guys back.”

On goalie Jesse Schwartzman
Jesse Schwartzman is a leader. His voice carries throughout this whole place and it is good to have him back and it looks like he has not lost a beat.”

On his expectations for the season
“I think every year they are high. If you look at this league though, there are only six teams, so every team has a lot of talent. There are other aspects you have to look at – the locker room, how guys get along with the coaching staff and the organization. I think we have all those pieces. I am looking forward to this year and I am looking forward to getting to where we need to be.”

On building team chemistry during Training Camp
“It is on-the-field chemistry building but it is off the field, too. We had a nice team dinner last night at the Hard Rock Café. It is good to have everybody together. It is not just about lacrosse, but getting to know each other personally. We are in-and-out on the weekends and the more time we can spend together the better. I think that carries you longer into the season.”
