CO HS Front Range County Conference Week at a Glance

March 18, 2016
Post Douglas County Game of the Week Recap

Game of the Week Recap:

Last week’s Game of the Week was high paced and exciting between Chaparral High School and  Ponderosa High School.  The team hit the field with their mustaches on in support of the Mustache Madness by Ken Clausen.  The game not only was being fought on the field but had the  Army’s support while they helped hand out roster cards to the supporting fans. Denver Outlaws'  Ken Clausen was in attendance to help fight prostate cancer with his Mustache Madness Foundation during Mustache March.  All proceeds of this game went to the cause and helpded him with the battle against prostate cancer.

Chaparral Wolverines came out slow and finished the first half behind Ponderosa by a goal.  Chaparral hit the field the second half looking to take the game by storm.  When Coach Michael Magrin was asked what made this team successful in this game he said “Ponderosa played a smart, disciplined game. Our success was due to finishing quick in transition”.   Chaparral played a smart fast game lead by Adam Balsiger that proved to be an exciting win for the Wolverines.  Balsiger was recognized by the Outlaws and Chaparral’s coaching staff as the Denver Outlaws “Player of the Game” and invited to represent his team in the upcoming "Young Guns Shootout" during the Outlaws' half time on June 11.  When Coach Michael Magrin was asked what his team needed to work on to continue their success in the season he stated, “Minimize turnovers, and learn to start the game up-tempo on offense and defense.”   Keep playing hard Wolverines and work on the little things!  Good luck on the rest of the season.  Go Wolverines!

Wildcard Game of the Week:
Last week’s Wildcard Game was played by Englewood High School and Ridgeview Academy.  The Englewood Pirate’s had a big home game beating Ridgeview Academy.  Two players that stepped up big in this game to really help the Pirates to victory were Cody Shrednick #27, and Israel Rubio, both posting 2 goals, 1 assist, and an amazing 17 ground ball pickups.  This win gave the young team composed mostly of freshmen, a needed boost of confidence.  With a few injured players back in the roster this week  Coach Mark says “this really helped change the team dynamic”; also saying that the team's passing game has improved with every practice.  A big part of the win was due to the impressive goal tending.  The Englewood goalie is in his first season of lacrosse and improves with every game learning it inside and out.  We at the Denver Outlaws say “Good luck Pirates!”

Game of the Week: Overland High School  vs. Gateway High School
Overland High School will be tested in this week's game at Overland's home field at 4:00 pm.  Gateway High School comes in to this game with a 4-2 record and 43 rd overall in the state.  Overland maintains a 2-7 record.  The Overland Blazers will look to their three captains seniors; Jordan Scherner #17, Glenn Tirrell #14, Joe Truong #11.  These three players are not only leaders on the field but off the field as well.   Another up and coming star on the team is Kelecahi Chukwuka.  Chukwuka is a great scorer, and a young leader who will help carry the team for years to come.  This year the coaching staff has emphasized the pace of play, fundamentals, accuracy, discipline, and mental stamina in practice.  Mental stamina is part of Overland's motto which is “One –More Look”,  reminding the team to not play  selfishly, and looking to not only help the individual but help the team victory.  Coach Danny hopes to walk away tomorrow a better team and a team with one more victory under their belt.  Good luck Blazers!

Wild Card Game of the Week: Evergreen High School  vs. Conifer High School
Year in and year out, this game proves to be a battle between the mountain teams' rivalry.  Wednesday's game will prove to be a true test of the schools in the mile high mountains.

Evergreen High School has dedicated this season to the passing of the boys' lacrosse teams' past coach. Coach Toby Plank passed away in December due to Cancer, the team has pulled together to dedicate this season to the memory of their passionate coach, Toby Plank.    Coach Jon and the Evergreen Cougars will be looking for leadership from his three captains Brad Lindsay #27,  Mike Rogers # 36, and Jimmy Stephens #24.  These players will need  to lead by example in order to be a disciplined team and control ball position.  Another player that Evergreen will be look for in order to put points on the scoreboard is junior #8 Evan Dyba, who as an attackman leads the Cougars in overall points. Good luck this week Cougars!
