Columbine Rebels vs. Heritage Eagles

Littleton Cup Championship

April 21, 2012

Sports Authority Field at Mile High

For the second year in a row the Columbine Rebels made it to the Championship Game of the annual Littleton Cup.  This year they faced off against the Heritage Eagles in the early game of the double header at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.  Columbine (ranked 3 rd in the Denver Post Lacrosse Poll) was looking for their second Littleton Cup Championship, while Heritage looked to add to their 6 game winning streak.

The Rebels would jump out to a quick start gaining a 3-1 lead early in the 1 st quarter.  Heritage would cut the deficit to one as the quarter ran out.  The 2 nd quarter would feature good defense and big saves from both goalies.  Columbine would finally break through to score 3 unanswered goals in the last 3 minutes of the half making the score 7-2.   The Rebels would keep up the offensive pressure to start the second half recording 3 more quick goals.  As the 4 th quarter would start Columbine’s lead would balloon to 12-3.  Heritage finally was able to increase pressure, adding two goals, but in the end it was just too late.  Columbine would repeat as Littleton Cup Champions with a 13-6 victory.

Columbine head coach Matt Plitnick chose attack #13 Ryan Kelly (5 goals, 2 assists) as his Player of the Game.  While Heritage head coach Brandt Hodgson would name #21 midfielder Sean Sullivan as his Player of the Game.  Both head coaches mentioned that having the teams being able to play at Sports Authority Field at Mile High was a big highlight and a life time memory.  Coach Plitnick would go on to add, “Playing on the same field where the Broncos do, in front of the biggest crowd of the season and taking home the Littleton Cup trophy is something the kids will never forget.”  We also asked Coach Plitnick what his team took away from this big game, “we will take away the fact that we were able to raise money for a good charity and have a totally unique experience that is usually reserved to top college and pro teams. All the kids commented on how the last play before their game was the Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas pass against the Steelers in the playoffs...”

The second game of the Littleton Cup was the Chatfield Chargers vs. the Littleton Lions.  That game would see the Lions defeat the Chargers 7-3.  The Denver Outlaws would like the congratulate all of the teams that participated in the Littleton Cup and wish the best of luck on trying to reach the playoffs.
